Yes - it's a health threat. But the media, because they are what they are, are exploiting the pandemic to fill up their air time.

And, the pharmacy industry is exploiting it to sell drugs...

Before the swine flu there was chicken flu a few years back - what happened here in Bulgaria is that the price of chicken and eggs dropped. I took advantage of that :)

Lets hope more people see through the media hype.

@wsb - I've also been on a media "diet"....not so much as I have eliminated and moved to a cabin in the woods (although that would sound peaceful...well till I went stir crazy)...but I now just select what I want to read and where I go to get it....without getting caught up in the ongoing whirlwind of 24hour circus style news. I often wonder if there was a news blackout nationwide for a year....would people go nuts...or would they start to focus on the local community around them instead....which if anyone is going to survive anything, a strong close network of people is essential.

@Greg - no idea about the argument for the elderly....but if the vaccines were not "effective"...then I would think that should mean more flu-related deaths in a group with lowered immunity and higher risks for secondary infections/developments....but that is not the case.

@Jay - nothing scares me more than doctors "thinking" they are doing the right thing and will do whatever it takes to carry out their mission to "save" others....like the doctor giving the flu shot when the woman wasn't looking. I have never had a flu shot and will continue to abstain.....as my immune system is doing it's job unlike some others.

The populace should take the same precautions for H1N1 that we should be taking toward the flu every year. That means washing your hands, not sneezing on your neighbors, etc.

As far as the flu vaccine goes, we already know that vaccines aren't as effective in the elderly population. The argument is that their immune system isn't as responsive. True or false? I don't know.

It is interesting that the elderly don't seem to be as affected by the H1N1 as people in their 20's and 30's. The argument is that they may have been exposed to a similar virus in the 1976 "scare."

I think your commentary re: info overload is right on the money. I have been on a "strict media diet" for years. I occasionally worry that I am not following the issues closely enough and doing my duty as an informed citizen, but reading an in-depth article is really more to the point.
