Im a thin guy already with no need of any weight loss but have gone low carb for the growth hormone and testosterone.

Does the fact that im naturally thin and athletic possibly mean that a high carb diet may not, in fact, be negatively affecting my GH and T?

Hi Mike,

ive just started my first week of IF and so far so good! My friend told me to try it and ive been fasting from 8pm-3pm with a 6 hour window, i really like it and haven't had any dizziness or anything like that but i have laid off exercising for the week due to injury.
Next week im hoping to go back to the gym and have a cardio/weights workout of around 45mins. I usually prefer to do this workout first thing in the morning before work but now this will be in the middle of my fast and i wonder if this is a good idea or if i should exercise after work (much easier to talk myself out of after a long day at work!)??

Thanks so much

Jason - In the pwo window ideally you want to avoid fats that will contribute to slowing down gastric emptying (hence the whole pwo window timeframe). If you have a small amount, I'm sure it's not that devastating. Fat during the rest of the day is not an issue.

Mike, when you suggest lower your fat intake at PWO, would that also apply to good fats, (i.e., chicken breast over rice, not too much, with broccoli and a spinach salad with eggs(good fat), sliced almonds(raw), cucumbers, and avocados(good fat). Balsamic V. and Extra virgin olive oil(good fat) for a dressing. I also have an apple and another piece of fruit afterward.

JE - Good rule of thumb, avoid high carbs AND high fat at the same meal. If you want a pwo higher carb intake then lower the fats (or have none). The rest of the day you can do low carb/higher fat. Nothing wrong with cycling and will improve your muscle building/glycogen recovery efforts. Everyone has a "spillover" point in which too much carbs spillover from muscle into fat cells....so you can play around to find that individualistic point in the pwo window.

Mike, I wonder, what do you think of PWO carbs in a high-fat diet like Mark Sisson's primal Blueprint where up to 60% of calories come from fat? Should you consume them like in a Targeted Ketogenic diet?

Andy - Most people are insulin resistant to some degree so ditching the grains, cereals, breads and other processed sources of carbs is an important step. Also make sure to get some exercise in, particularly strength training in 2-3x a week for just 20-30min. It will help those muscles become more insulin sensitive and improve your glucose metabolism. You will need calorie deficit to burn fat, but most people eating "Paleo" will not eat a ton of calories....as good luck overstuffing yourself on apples, meat and broccoli! Good luck on converting anyone to eating better....I say start with yourself first, change yourself and then let others ask about why you are looking so good, healthy and happy all the time.

Cheers Mike,

The 80 grams came from Mr Eades. I discovered I was Insulin Resistant last year so have been knocking back the carbs. I hardly eat any bread/pasta etc (Very difficult as I live in Sicily!) and have lost a lot of fat but my belly remains too big. Should I keep the calories controlled or if I eat in A paleo style will they take care of themselves?
Love this site.. Im trying to convert the locals into eating better but lets just say they are a tad stubborn. They dont even like to eat food from other towns as they think its weird!
Oh and Happy New Year by the way!

Andy - typically you do not count the fiber. But then again how did you come up with the 80 number? I'm sure if you are eating vegetables with some fruit you will be ok....it's all the other sources of carbs that can add up rather quickly (bread, cereals, grains, etc).

Mike,

Regarding Carb levels when eating fruit and veg. If I am trying to lose body fat I need to keep carb levels under 80 grams. But is this level the total carb content of the veg or the carb content minus the fibre?

Thanks
