Thank you so much for this article. Clears up a lot of the 'broscience' out there of needing ridiculous amount of protein.

I'm confused how a post workout window study contradicts 24hr overall protein synthesis rates? Either you spike it early and it tapers off, or you have a higher consistent baseline. Much like Whey protein increases immediate protein synthesis but they drastically drops off as protein oxidation increases vs slower digesting (casein/real food) that has a slow higher baseline over a longer period of time.

This has been a viable question I have asked and been asked about for years. It's good to see some research on the subject and some science behind what we try and do.

Sorry Derek, you are wrong about the effect on younger adults.

At rest, the optimal whey protein dose for non-frail older adults to consume, to increase myofibrillar MPS above fasting rates, was 20 g. Resistance exercise increases MPS in the elderly at all protein doses, but to a greater extent with 40 g of whey ingestion. These data suggest that, in contrast to younger adults, in whom post-exercise rates of MPS are saturated with 20 g of protein, exercised muscles of older adults respond to higher protein doses.

That is a quote from the study you refer to. It clearly states that 20g casused stauration for younger adults, yet the older adults responded better toa 40g dose. So, young people need less protein to boost synthesis, while older adults benefit from more protein.

http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayAbstract?fromPage=online&aid=8487063

This study contradicts everything on this page. Thirty-seven elderly men (age 71 (sd 4) years), saw a significant muscle protein synthesis increase from 20 to 40 grams.

If 71 year old men see a difference, you can bet younger, higher testosterone men would see an even bigger difference and would benefit from 50, even 60 grams.

Hershell Walker did only bodyweight and ate mostly one meal a day. He wasn't rich (the exact opposite). Just keep progressing in strength, you get bigger muscles. Eat good meals and don't sweat the protein shakes.

Excellent article, thank you. I stopped gyming due to a shortage on funds, eating steak and drinking protein shakes daily is not very cheap. Knowing that I no longer need a truck of protein has boost my confidence and I am hitting the weights tonight.
